God's Story

While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man. And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai calling, “Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision.”

As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.” – Daniel 8:15-17, NIV

“…we are being introduced to a recurring historical phenomenon: the clever but ruthless world dictator, who stops at nothing in order to achieve his ambitions. The book proclaims that such rulers cannot ultimately succeed. Though they talk and act big, and though they cause great suffering to many, their end is sure.” – Joyce G. Baldwin

While often historians and Biblical scholars don’t see eye to eye, Daniel chapter 8, invites us to learn more of history so that we might see the splendor of the prophetic vision. To that end, I  wanted to share some links for further research:

Alexander the Great

Antiochus IV Epiphanes

Judas Maccabeus

As we turn our attention to this final section of Daniel, it is helpful to remember that the story being told is God’s Story.
