Peace: Day 6

Micah 5:2-5

It is amazing the power that words have. These words from the prophet Micah are familiar to us because they appear in the narrative of Matthew 2, when Magi from the east came to Jerusalem asking about the birth place of a King. To answer to this question, the scribes of King Herod’s court referred to these verses in Micah 5. For centuries, these verses held the promise of a Ruler born in Bethlehem, who would bring peace. Just a few days later, these same verses brought terror to the people of Bethlehem. Herod’s troops carried out his horrible orders, killing all the boys two years old and younger. Yet, Herod in all his fury was still unable to end the life of the promised King of the Jews. Micah tells us that Jesus will rule His people, like a shepherd takes care of his flock. He also tells us that Jesus will rule in the strength of the Lord and the Majesty of His name. When this happens, we, His people will live safely and His greatness will be known worldwide. When will this happen? We do not know but we look forward to the day when Jesus returns and sets up His Kingdom on earth!

But what do we do until then? Do we have to live like the people of Bethlehem, scared of what may come? No. Micah gives us a wonderful promise at the end of his prophecy about Jesus-He will be our peace. No matter what happens, we can know that Jesus is our peace. With our trust placed in Him nothing can take our Peace from us.

Prayer focus: Ask God to speed the return of Jesus. Give thanks for your relationship with Jesus, which brings you peace no matter what is happening or may happen in your life.
