Joy: Day 4

Psalm 4:5-7

David wrote Psalm 4 in a tough moment. Most scholars think that he wrote it during the time in which he was exiled from Jerusalem because of the rebellion of his son. At what had to be one of the lowest moments in his life, David says that God had filled His heart with joy. It was a greater joy than when the new grain and wine abound. There is no greater time of joy in a farming society than when harvest comes. The work is done and the fruit of your labor stored safely away. How did David have this greater joy? What made this abundant joy in David’s life, even at one of his lowest moments? The Lord answered David’s request to allow the light of His face shine upon David. Knowing the smile of God’s presence in a real way turned David’s dark moment into a moment of joy. God still longs to change our darkest and bleakest moments if we simply ask. He wants us to know the greater joy that only He can bring.

Prayer focus: Ask God to let the light of His face shine upon you. Thank God for His desire to fill your life with joy.
